ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE, Winner
Plastic Bags

After much talk, discussion and debate, the County of Maui officially banned plastic bags in January of this year. This was done to save landfill space, since plastic bags don’t really degrade when thrown away, but few remember that we as a society adopted plastic grocery bags as a way to keep from killing so many trees to make paper bags. Ideally, those going to the store will bring their own reusable cloth bags, but those who forget (ie, most of us) will be able to use the old dead tree bags. Unless you go to Costco or K-Mart or some other big box store, in which case you’re going to be hauling away your goods by hand.
