Mind Body Spirit
LEDE_INTRO

I don't know about you, but I get tired of hearing that I need to quit smoking, curb my alcohol consumption, exercise at least three times a week, drink goji juice, cut carbs, meditate, take my vitamins, watch less television, practice safe sex, laugh more, brush after every meal and say my prayers. In this day and age, we're bombarded with advice for healthy living. Sometimes I believe that we live in a society that condemns those who don't put the time, effort and cash into keeping their mind, body and spirit in top shape. Not that treating you body like a temple is a bad thing, but sometimes the required worship can be overwhelming. So this year, I wanted our annual Mind, Body and Soul Issue to bypass all of the normal stuff people talk about when it comes to good living. You won't find a single story here about the necessity of thinking positive, eating non-GMO foods or tapping into the power of meditation. Instead, we've loaded this issue with methods that aren't completely ordinary—things that lie on the fringe of alternative health care like hypnotherapy, sensory deprivation floatation tanks, yoga while suspended in a swing and, yes, breast massage. Hopefully, you'll find something in these stories to inspire you in your quest to become a well-rounded human being. But if I can offer some advice, it would be to take all advice—including, I suppose, this advice—with a grain of salt and remember that it's okay to laugh at yourself and the crazy world around you. In fact, doing so is completely healthy. Cheers, Starr Begley

How weird stuff can emerge, for the greater good, during hypnotherapy

Until recently, the only experience I had with hypnotism came from the county fair. As a child, I loved watching members of the crowd crow like roosters or search for imaginary items onstage.more
