Picks of the WeekFriday (October 22), 5-10pm & Saturday (October 23), 4-10pm at the Pioneer Mill on Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, $2/$3, kids 5 and under freeOctober 21, 2010 | 10:30 AMby Jacob ShaferThe West side took its lumps this week when the County announced it won't close Front Street for Halloween. But not every event is floundering. Lahaina Plantation Days kicks off its second year (meaning it can now accurately be called "annual") with an array of diversions, including |
Picks of the Week 2Friday (October 22), 9pm at the Hard Rock Cafe, Lahiana, $35October 21, 2010 | 10:34 AMby Anuhea YagiSwiss surrealist H. R. Giger's Penis Landscape was framed in stars and stripes and made poster-size, as an insert into The Dead Kennedys' 1985 album Frankenchrist, earning the band a date with the courts for "distributing matter harmful to minors" (ironically, it ended with a hung jury). A year later, they disbanded, but reformed in 2001—without lead singer Jello Biafra. But if you're a fan, you already knew that. So I'll be succinct and say that today, East Bay Ray is still their six string samurai, and D. H. Peligro is back on drums. Now manning the mic is vocalist Ron "Skip" Greer (his nickname, maybe, because he ditched Wynona Rider for the DK gig), and newest to the group, Greg Reeves on bass. In any configuration, it's the band's first time playing in Hawaii (and I'll take the chance to insert the aside that their first-ever gig was at a San Francisco Filipino hub dubbed "Fab Mab"), so you won't want to miss it. While you may be so inspired by our beautiful bar issue—and Hard Rock is indeed a good watering hole—don't get too drunk to, ahem, make love. Because rolling down stairs and starting fights isn't as fun as it sounds. 877-714-7668, groovetickets.com, www.underworldevents.com |
Picks of the Week 3October 21, 2010 | 10:53 AMby Jacob Shafer'Couple of chances to make your spine tingle this weekend. First, check out the inimitable Kathy Collins (and 'Tita, of course) as she presents an evening of "Chicken Skin Stories" in preparation for that upcoming spook-tacular holiday. Weak-kneed individuals and keiki under 10 need not apply. (Saturday, October 23, 7:30pm & Sunday, October 24, 5pm at the Steppingstone Playhouse, Queen Kaahumanu Center, Kahului, $15, 244-8760 or mauiacademy.org) For chicken skin of a different sort, check out a unique melding of visual and aural delights, as acclaimed pianist/composer Peter Kater and sculptor/painter Spar Street present "Call of Love," an exhibition of their disparate but complementary skill sets. The show will be aired on Akaku, so attendees agree to have their likeness captured and disseminated. (Saturday, October 23, 6-10pm at the Spar Street Gallery, 150 Hana Hwy., Kahului, $30 show/$60 show and VIP reception, tickets at Alive and Well in Kahului and Hawaiian Moons in Kihei, 269-2460) |
Picks of the Week 4Saturday (October 23), 9pm at the Maui Theatre, Lahaina, $20/$25October 21, 2010 | 10:57 AMby Jacob ShaferOK, I'll admit it: when I first heard Hal Sparks was coming to Maui as part of the Maui Celebrity Series, my reaction was, "Hal who?" What's amazing is that I have watched literally hundreds of hours of I Love the [Insert Recent Decade] on VH1, occasionally in a state of semi-coherence. And slinging quips on those shows—along with E! network's Talk Soup—is Sparks's claim to fame. That and a role on the critically acclaimed Queer As Folk, a show I have never watched (not that there's anything wrong with that). So what I realized is that I don't recognize Sparks because of his name, but rather because of what he's done. And really, when I think about it, a lot of my favorite performers are like that—people I could pick out of a lineup and say, "Yeah, I know that dude, he's funny," but if I had to introduce them to someone at a party it'd be awkward. Sparks will be joined at his Valley Isle appearance by Chino LaForge and DJ Aggressive Cane Spider—now there's a name I won't forget. 856-7973, www.mauicelebrityseries.com |
