There's not much more that you could ask from a public pool. I have always had a fantastic time whenever I've swum there. I'm not sure what it is that really sets it apart from the other pools out there. Maybe it's just that Kihei is so damn hot? Think that's what makes it seem so extra wonderful? I mean, I live upcountry and while the pool is pretty nice, there's not many days I feel like swimming unless it's a freak-of-nature day and scorching hot. Who knows? What we do know is that for whatever reason, the Kihei pool rocks!

But sometimes all the sand and tides and unpredictable waves are just a little too much. Plus, variety is the spice of life. Kihei Aquatic is great for serious lap swimmers (there’s almost always open lanes) but it’s also family friendly with it’s shallow kiddie pool and that big fountain that keeps the keiki wet and occupied during those long, hot South side summer afternoons. But at least it’s still open—providing a very alluring, very free option for those days when surf and sand just feel a tad too daunting. There are ample lanes for lap swimmers, a nice keiki area with a wading pool and big, splashy fountain and clean, easily accessible changing facilities. In short, all the stuff you want in a pool. Plus, in the sweltering heat of a Kihei summer, you can never have too many options to dip in and cool off.

Damn, this place is swank: Olympic-sized eight-lane competition pool, yard by yard warm-up pool (also eight lanes), 10-foot by 30-foot keiki pool, plus one-meter and three-meter spring boards and a few meeting and hospitality rooms thrown in. This place only opened in 1998--how did Maui survive so long without it? It’s open every day, but you should call for hours.
Competitive swimmers and kids trying to escape the South Maui heat alike are patrons of the Kihei Aquatic Center. With an Olympic-sized pool for swim meets, a training pool for warm-up laps and a kiddie pool for keiki, the Center is great for cooling off and/or practicing your backstroke. And it's one of the few places where speedos are socially acceptable. So slap on the sunscreen and get your daily doses of Vitamin D and chlorine. Lifeguards are an added safety feature. 303 E.
