Best Recycling Center, Winner
Kihei Recycling Center

Address: Welakahao Rd. off Piilani Hwy., Kihei, HI 96753
What makes a good recycling center? An easy-to-access location? Check. Convenient hours? Check. People who’ll help you sort your bottles and cans and hand you a few bucks for your trouble? Check. Kihei Recycling Center also boasts remarkably few flies. I’m not saying there aren’t any, but considering the place is full of sticky beer and soda residue and old crusty cans, you’d think it’d be swarming with insects. Not so. I don’t know if the center necessarily deserves credit for this (though they do keep things relatively clean), but still, it makes the chore of tossing out your reusable refuse, if not pleasant, at least wholly tolerable. BEST RECYCLING / REDEMPTION CENTER, Winner
Kihei Recycling Center

Address: Welakahao Rd. off Piilani Hwy., Kihei, HI 96753
This may not be the sexiest category—ask someone what they want to do on a sunny Saturday and “go to the recycling center” probably won’t be their first choice—but it’s an important one. If you recycle (and shame on you if you don’t) having a reliable, convenient spot to drop off those cans and bottles is essential. Kihei Recycling meets both of those criteria and is also, as we noted last year when they won, well- kept up, meaning a minimum of flies, sticky puddles, weird smells and other things that prevent people from following through on the last of the three “R”s. And really, how many businesses hand you money on your way out? Maybe recycling is a little sexy after all.

Ideally Maui County will someday develop curbside recycling in which all of our glass, paper, plastic, green waste and garbage gets picked up at the house or apartment, but until that happens, we’re on our own as we try to keep the recyclables out of the landfill. And the county’s Kihei recycling center, located in the center of South Maui, is your favorite, quite possibly because it’s open A LOT. Like 7am to 6pm every day, and they do HI 5 redemptions daily from 8:30am to 5pm (they are, however, closed from 1-2 every day for lunch). Anyway, the guys who take your old bottles, cans, plastic and papers are capable and courteous. As they should be, since we’re going out of our way to see that our trash goes where it should. Welakahao Road, just below Piilani Hwy. (AP)

4. Kihei Recycling Center

Address: Welakahao Rd. off Piilani Hwy., Kihei, HI 96753

Guys, having a favorite recycling center is a little like having a favorite child. Sure, parents probably have one, but you’re not supposed to say it out loud. Okay, the Kihei location is spacious and well lit. Point taken, it's just a tiny bit more conveniently located, right off Piilani Hwy. And yeah, it does have that nifty HI5 Redemption Center, but c’mon, you’re making all the other recycling centers feel bad. E. Welakahao Rd. at Piilani Hwy., Kihei
