Haleakala National Park has opened up a new internship program that they believe will provide critical stepping stones in helping middle school students develop marketable skills and professional contacts, as well as learn about and appreciate Hawaii's natural areas and species. The youths must be available full time from Mar. 12-16 from 7:30am to 4pm. Free transportation to the park will be provided from designated pick-up areas.

The week-long internship is designed to introduce kids to park programs and generate interest in careers related to natural resources management and facilities management. Twelve students will be selected through a competitive process.

It doesn't cost the students anything to apply. They can obtain applications from Kuhea Paracuelles at 572-4452 or via email at kuhea_paracuelles@nps.gov. Applications are due by Jan. 31, 2012. This is the third internship program offered at Haleakala, the other two being a high school summer internship and an 11-week intensive program for college students.
