February 08, 2012 | 12:47 PM A panel of four historians involved in Lahaina Town restoration will discuss sites that need work at this month's Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 5:30pm at Maui Tropical Plantation.
The Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce meets monthly to promote and sustain Hawaiian culture and enhance the socioeconomic status of Native Hawaiians. Planning consultant Chris Hart will speak at the meeting about supporting the 49-year-old historic restoration plan that has yet to be completed. A panel of historians will also address several historic sites in Lahaina, which Hart considers "the cultural watershed of Hawaii."
Hart, a former Maui County Planning Director and current CEO of Chris Hart & Partners, worked on the Lahaina Historic Distric 1 Plan. It was conceived in postwar Maui when the Westside was not yet a tourist destination. In 1962, the Maui County Council formally created Lahaina District 1.
The Lahaina Restoration Foundation, County of Maui, Na Kupuna 'o Maui and other organizations have contributed to the implementation of parts of the plan, but several Hawaiian sites still await completion.
Membership in the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce is open to all who share and practice Hawaiian values and seek to promote and sustain Hawaiian culture. Their monthly meeting and forum is open to the public. Cocktails and networking begins at 5:30pm and the dinner and forum begin at 6pm.
