May 30, 2012 | 01:14 PM The Edventure program at UH Maui College has been offering non-credit course training and skill building to more than 12,000 Maui students annually. For those of us who lack deep pockets, Alexander & Baldwin Foundation is helping keep costs down with tuition grants. On June 7, UH Maui will host a reception at Leis Family Class Act in the Paina Building from 5:30 to 7pm to celebrate those who've benefited. During the reception, A&B plans to reveal a check to the Office of Continuing Education (OCET).
"The generous support of A&B over the years has helped many businesses, and thousands of business-minded individuals within our community, to thrive and flourish," said Sue Feltz, EdVenture's business program coordinator.
Since 2000, A&B's donations to EdVenture have helped Maui's unemployed, entrepreneurs and small businesses by building programs at the college and providing tuition grants to individuals, enabling greater access to training for the Maui community.
"Maui is where A&B first set its roots over 140 years ago, and it is still where the majority of our employees live and work to this day, so we have a strong interest in supporting efforts that strengthen our community," says Meredith Ching, president of the A&B Foundation. "We have been most pleased with the initiatives for continuing small business education that have been promulgated by UHMC and are proud that we've been able to support these efforts over the past 15 years. When local businesses are strong and dynamic, the entire community benefits. Maui College's multi-faceted approach to bring new ideas, training, and innovation to the community and has been an important part of the formula for giving our business community the best possible tools for success."
Tim Lara, owner of Hawaiian Paddle Sports and recent recipient of funds, said, "A&B's training funds helped our guides become certified Marine Naturalists, which allows our company to stay on the forefront of sustainable ecotourism. We're proud to be one of only three Maui companies that are recognized by the Hawaii Ecotourism Association. The A&B Training Grant helped us afford to continue our dedication of preserving Maui's fragile marine ecology."
