Walter Ritte is the real deal. He calls himself a "prominent Hawaiian activist and long time advocate for Hawaiian Rights." In 1976 he was one of the original nine activists who landed on Kahoolawe to protest the U.S. Navy's use of the island as a bombing range. After six months in prison (where he was reportedly treated as something like a rock star), Ritte joined the 1978 constitutional convention that created the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. He was easily elected as one of its first trustees, but tossed off the board in 1984 following a conviction for illegal night-hunting (in 2000 he was sentenced to a year's probation after pleading guilty to helping burn down a Molokai Ranch building). Still beloved, and very controversial, he's spent recent years fighting La'au Point development and cruise ship landings while trying to make a better life for the Kanaka Maoli.

I could be mistaken, but wasn't Walter convicted for or at least a suspect in the cutting of water lines of a development on the east end of Molokai, in the 80's? Walter should not ever be treated like a "rock star", the guy is a vandal of criminal proportions, and thinks he "owns" Molokai. Nothing Pono there.

    No Aloha

Short Story: This person is BAD NEWS and will not get my vote.

God help OHA and the rest of us if Water Rittee is elected. He is an extremist with no aloha and no regard for the law. He is a loud mouthed bully who intimidates to get his way.

Yes, he was convicted of vandalism, has been booted out of meetings on Molokai for misbehavior and forced to resign from Planning Commission and Molokai Enterprise Community boards for not attending meetings.

Short Story: This person is BAD NEWS.

Hater thugs don't belong on OHA

Ritte is a racist thug, and has single-handedly turned Molokai into a miserable, hostile, meth addicted welfare island. His latest ego-maniacal stunt of insisting that the captain of a very small eco tourism boat "ask permission" to come ashore on Molokai just shows how delusional he is regarding his station in life and what a Colonel Kurtz complex he has. Get off the pipe Ritte, and get off the dole, I'm sick of supporting you and your weak-minded haole haters with my tax dollars while you illegally bar any possible revenue sources for the people of Molokai. Hey, about that Molokai Ranch building you burned down, howz that working for you? Your idiocy caused how many people to lose their jobs when the Ranch pulled out BECAUSE OF YOU? Please, get this guy off the ballot, he is not even close to being worthy of being an OHA Trustee.

This Man is a bad representative of the Aloha Spirit, that so many great Hawaiian People live by. We should judge people by their actions and deeds. I guess I don't like Rock Stars.

    Time for Maui County
    July 01, 2012 | 10:42 AM

it's time for Maui County to pull the plug on Molokai.

Cut the welfare, stop coddling these jokers. the activists on Molokai think they are a law unto themselves.

Mayor Arakawa needs to clamp down on them, revoke the Molokai Planning commissioners. Bring it all to Maui where 'cousin' isn't on the commission and can keep the corruption going.

The police on Molokai don't do squat.

If the taxpayers in Maui County and State of Hawaii knew half the B*S* that happened on Molokai there would be a taxpayer revolt.

How can you fight to keep jobs OUT and also ask for more welfare and unemployment?

The state needs to strip the people of Molokai of their perceived self-control and stop letting them squirm around like an out of control 14 year old girl.

If you've ever had kids, you know when enough is enough and you have to start with Tough Love. Molokai is the spoiled 14 year old girl who has gotten her way too long and needs to be taught discipline and tough love by the rest of us.

I guess deep down inside this joker rittee is a 14 year old girl trying to get out.

And this guy has reproduced and has children!

This is me again. I've been thinking about my previous post and need to point out.... part of the responsibility for this jerk lies with ex-Mayor Tavares. She coddled him and his ilk and gave in to their demands.

I'm sorry for Mr. Arakawa who has to clean up after the mess that Tavares left. I can only hope that Tavares goes off to a rest home in Vegas and doesn't come back to do more damage to Maui County... and take Ritte with her!

As a longtime resident of Molokai raised here in the 50's till now, I can say what a depressing place Molokai has become. Molokai was a vibrant place when I was a kid. The previous commentators have a good idea of what has happened to Molokai. My relatives' kids are just so happy when they get out of here for good. So simple answer, get out of here Molokai's children. Not good.. the rest can bicker, play all kinds of phoney games. Life is too short.
