Running for: U.S. Congress, 2nd District

Running against: Tulsi Gabbard

Birthplace: Elizabeth City, North Carolina

Profession: "working homeless"

Electoral Win/Loss Record: 0/1

First electoral victory: N/A

Supports: Deism, "sensitive ladies," Capitalism (that's with a capital C)

Opposes: People forgetting the 9/11 attacks, anti-smoking laws, same-sex marriage, abortion (except in cases of rape and incest), Obamacare, the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Gets campaign donations from: No one at press time.

Not sure where to begin with David Kawika Crowley, except that his presence on the ballot either shows the Hawaii Republican Party is capable of great imagination in its selection of U.S. congressional candidates, or great desperation. Crowley, as of press time, lacks a job, a home (outside of his van) and any record of having received campaign donations, despite the fact that he's running for a relatively high-profile office. His claim to fame lies in the musical rather than political world–he co-wrote the songs "Hawaii 78" and "Hula Lady." In 1991, he lost a bid for the mayorship of Hawaii Island, and his campaign today is practically non-existent. "As of August 2012," the Washington Times reported, "he had raised no money for his campaign, which consists of a website [kawika4congress.com], his personal appearances and sign waving along the side of Oahu's highways." His biggest political issue today is getting bars and restaurants to once again allow smoking indoors. MauiTime endorsed him during the 2012 Republican Primary election because we want to see more candidates like Crowley, who live like normal people and aren't afraid to speak out about what they truly believe.

    Crowley Deserves to Win!

MT, you wrote, "we want to see more candidates like Crowley, who live like normal people and aren't afraid to speak out about what they truly believe."

I agree. If you don't mind me repeating something, I just submitted the following to another news site that covered Crowley: it echoes your sentiments strongly.

I think it's been VERY poor form for her to deny his efforts to meet her in debate. How anyone can run for a national level public office today and REFUSE a public debate and still have a hope of winning an election is beyond me. We've all seen how important it is to put candidates for office in a situation similar to what they' face in office: having to stand up to opposition and defend their ideas and stands publicly. There's no way that simple set piece interviews and public statements can be any substitute.

Crowley believes in what he stands for, and I actually don't agree with quite everything he stands for, BUT... at least he's got the courage to forthrightly pronounce and be willing to defend his stances.
