November 07, 2012 | 12:07 PM The island of Rapa Nui left many juicy mysteries for scientists in the 20th century to unravel. This week, the PBS program NOVA tackles the puzzle of how the islanders built giant stone statues called Moai that remain on the island long after their builders vanished.
Much of the show is filmed in Hawaii, where Dr. Terry Hunt, a professor of anthropology at UH Manoa, collaborated with a California university professor to research various theories. They created a five-ton replica of the statues at Kualoa Ranch and their experiments on the statue will be featured on the show.
The NOVA show "Mystery of Easter Island" debuted on PBS Hawaii Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 9pm, with encores scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 at 11pm and Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2pm.Maui's Intrepid Food Taster: Will Eat and Drink Anything
