December 19, 2012 | 02:22 PM In case you haven't noticed, Goodwill recently opened a store in Kahului on Alamaha Street. Goodwill has been operating in Hawaii since 1959, but this is their first Maui store. You will find a nice, big location with used clothing, furniture, accessories, housewares, bedding and jewelry. In addition, their new partnership with Maui Disposal will make it easier than ever to keep recycling and reusable commodities out of the landfill.
"We are extremely appreciative of Maui Disposal for choosing to partner with us," says Amanda Stevens, Communications Manager for Goodwill Industries. "Together, we provide Maui residents with a 'One Stop' opportunity to recycle and donate their gently used items to Goodwill supporting our job placement and job training programs in Maui and throughout the state of Hawaii. Donations support Goodwill's 501(c)(3) non-profit mission–to help people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient."
Goodwill has been working with Honolulu Disposal and Honolulu Recovery for the past 15 years, so naturally when they opened up shop on Maui they thought about working out a partnership with Maui Disposal. They are still negotiating whether dropping off your cans and bottles will result in donated monies to Goodwill, but they say it could happen.
"There is an opportunity for Goodwill to receive donated monies from HI5 commodities redeemed which is being discussed with Maui Disposal," says Stevens. "These certified HI5 redemption/donation centers are open for customers to redeem their HI5 recyclables as well as get paid top dollar for other recyclable material such as; copper, aluminum, brass and stainless steel. Cardboard, newspaper and plastic can also be recycled using the drop-boxes located at each location."
The donation centers have drop-off spots in Kihei and Wailuku. At the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, they have an attended location for drop-off. Goodwill Industries does not do pick-ups. You can also bring donations to the store location.
Goodwill's partnerships have been so successful on Oahu they have a partnership with Dell Computers that provides computer technology recycling for island residents. They hope to also offer this program on Maui in the near future.
Dell and the Environmental Protection Agency recently signed an agreement encouraging better recycling solutions for electronics alongside of a new national strategy aimed at recycling friendly designs by the electronics industry. On Oahu, the partnership with Goodwill and Dell plans to collect 60,000 pounds of e-waste and keep it out of the landfill. For more information on how to recycle your computer, visit Earth911.com.
