Barista, Starbucks at Maui Marketplace

March 10, 2005
I've been working at Starbucks for seven months. My sister works here, too. It's fun, we get to spend more time together. Before I worked here, I used to come and spend seven bucks on coffee every morning before going to work at Valley Isle Lighting. Now I work here and I love it.

I love to meet people. And I love coffee. Everyone loves coffee. We have a lot of daily customers and it gets to the point where we have their drink ready before they're though the door. You gotta know: who's the day people, who's the night people.

Then there's the customers who test us. They make their drinks hard to check our knowledge and see if we do it right: "Can I get a triple decaf venti, six pumps of vanilla, soy milk extra foam latte? Oh yes, with whipped cream." You know, something really odd. But they're paying a lot for their coffee, they want it exactly how they want it.

Like me, I like things neat. My pet peeve is wetness. Walking on wet floors, working around wet areas. I hate messy and if something is wet then something else can get wet. I'm a neat freak. I like to present things neatly. I do it at work and home. If someone at work spills coffee, I clean it before I make the next drink. Neatness is very important. My favorite quote is "beauty is internal." Still, you have to keep it neat.

I like to make scrapbooks, too. You get to make your own design with the photos. It's a good time to think, reflect, to be alone. And then you can share, and reflect your feelings and your life with the scrapbook. I do that on my days off.

Maui Marketplace is the first Starbucks that opened here. Not there are seven Starbucks on Maui. The expansion, I think, is a good thing. We have people who come in here to study school, to do work, even bible study. Everyone needs to drink coffee and it's a good place to be. MTW
