Cunning Lingle

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a May 31, 2005 press release

June 09, 2005
"The Council [on Revenue]'s robust outlook of an additional $157.9 million for [Fiscal Year] 05 and $1.36 billion for FY 2006 to 2011 reaffirms what we have been saying, that it's time to allow our residents to benefit from the state's growing, vibrant economy by providing immediate tax relief."

What she didn't say

The state could also use the money to start meeting her president's No Child Left Behind standards. Or we could start addressing that pesky backlog in school maintenance. While we're talking backlogs, we all know our roads—such as they are—need a lot more resurfacing than they're getting. And those bypasses we keep talking about but never build? State money could sure help there. Then there's the possibility of funding a true statewide curbside recycling program. Paying off our massive statewide debt is also a possibility.
