June 30, 2005 [POETRY] Maui and Oahu performance poet and storyteller Vernyce Dannells is a Renaissance woman. Her book of poetry called Temporarily Abated uses "song-stories and call-and-response tales gathered from around the world." In the piece "Maui Night," Dannells writes, "Sometimes when the air is fevered/and breathing seems the only motion in the universe/we know the stars will lose their places/and streak a radiant trajectory to earth." Marie Murphy Hara called Temporarily Abated, "A courageous assessment of what it means to be alive, female and unwilling to be anyone's stereotype." The event is free and Dannells will remain to sign copies. The Maui Baha'i Center is located at 3574 Kekahi Place in Makawao. Call 572-0474 for more info.
