June 30, 2005 [EVENT] Everyone loves a good calf-roping, bronc-busting rodeo, right? Well, most everyone. For animal lovers, rodeos can be dark places, full of animal abuse and neglect. But Maui Humane Society officials say Makawao's rodeo is a whole different ballgame. For the last 14 years, the Humane Society has been sending observers to the rodeo to make sure handlers were treating the animals well. That means no electric cattle prods, horse tripping, knocking calves over during roping contests and plenty of shade and water for the animals. "They expect us there," said Aimee Anderson, the Humane Society's Director of Animal Control. "They know it's in their best interest to run a cruelty free rodeo." The festivities start Friday night and extend through Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 572-9565. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
