Hula Extravaganza!

Thursday (today) through next Thursday, MACC

July 21, 2005
[DANCE/CULTURAL] This year Maui is hosting the hula party of the year. The second annual world conference of hula, Ka 'Aha Hula 'O Halauaola, is drawing thousands of people from all over to share culture and hula-esque activity. Thursday through Saturday, "hands-on" workshops and cultural classes featuring everything from the history of hula to the kind of dye to use for your grass skirt will be offered to registered participants, and include the greatest of hula masters. But then Monday through next Thursday, 6:30 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater, the public can view hula performances with different themes every night. From dance using some traditional hula implements to the more contemporary hula of the 21st century, as well as stories of the history and family traditions, this conference has a lot to offer any hula fanatic! And then there's the food, provided by Bentos & Banquets and Gourmet Catering & Tropical Desserts, available at 6 p.m. before each night's performance. The cost to register in the conference is $375 with an additional $225 for each workshop attended, while the evening performances cost $10 general admission, half cost for kids under 12, and free to conference participants. For more information, log onto www.hulaconference.org or call Moani Whittle-Wagner at (808) 984-3363. [GABRIELLE POCCIA]
