D'ANGELO - "BROWN SUGAR"

July 21, 2005
[R&B] So let's talk about this preacher boy. About 10 years ago, I was in Los Angeles when I first heard the buzz about some new artist named D'Angelo. My curiosity was piqued but I was skeptical—that's what I do. But when I put this neo-soul record on, it blew my mind.EThe vocals reminded me of my favorite singers Smoky Robinson and Al Green. Instantly, I knew I would wear this album out. You all might remember the record title hit, an ode to marijuana that was as intoxicating to listen to, as it probably was to make. But he also got me at the sexy ballad "You're My Lady" (which, after I saw him, made me wish I was) and my favorite Smokey Robinson and The Miracles song, "Crusin'." Not too many people can touch that. And oh, did he ever. This record got me through many hard days and nights. And still does. —Capitol Records 1995 [KIMBERLY L. WELCH]
