Surfer Girls, Part II

Now through Aug. 26, at the Livewire Cafe, Lahaina

July 28, 2005
[ART] If you're in Lahaina checking the surf at Breakwall and happen to stop by Livewire Cafe for refreshment, you're in for a treat. The Westside cafe is decked out with some cool artwork for your eyes to feast on, in an exhibit entitled "Surf Movements." Check out Joanne dePape's colorful and dynamic perspective on surfing. And if you, too, are in love with the ocean, Gianna's Mitchell's brilliant waves will transport you.

DePape started painting when she was a little girl and hasn't stopped. Five years ago, she moved from Canada to the sunny skies of Maui, where she—like so many others before her—couldn't help but take up surfing. The result is an inspired merging of passions.

"Surfing is my passion—I paint what I'm passionate about," said dePape. "I will paint when I can't surf, and surf when it's good."

Mitchell loves to surf as well and says that the inspiration for her vivid depictions of waves comes simply from "something that just strikes me.

"It's fun for me to paint what I love—surf," said Mitchell.

Both artists have their original artwork on display and for sale at Livewire, for the next few weeks. If you're able to take a break from the epic (ha ha—sorry, but it's summer, kids!) surf on the west side, check out the artwork of these two prolific surfer girls. [LINDA GAMPERT]
