Maui Onion Festival

Saturday-Sunday, at Whaler's Village in Ka'anapali

August 04, 2005
[FOOD] Whalers Village is the place to be this weekend and not just because of Dig Me Beach. It's time for the 16th Annual Maui Onion Festival! See thousands of onions create laughter, not tears. For those of you who missed it last year, here's what happened. Local celebrity chefs joined forces to celebrate the world-famous Maui onion through festive demonstrations, tastings and competitions. For free, you can watch these guys take raw, native-grown onions and transform them into tasty sensations. And do it with flair. You can expect the vegetable to take the shape of onion rings, onion salsas, onion-flavored kettle corn and much, much more. Highlight activities will be the raw onion eating contest (it's up for grabs!), and the Maui Onion Recipe contest. Killer prizes go to the one amateur and one professional chef who conjure up the most creative, daring and mouthwatering onion recipes. If you already appreciate the onion and realize how boring life would be without it, it's a no-brainer to show up. If not, let the Maui Onion Festival make a believer and onion-lover out of you. Just try to see if you can make it through the day without falling for some new, intoxicating onion treat and have heaps of fun in the process.  And don't worry about onion breath; sweets are readily available and there's always Leilani's hula pie or Hula Grill's ice cream sandwich to drown the aftertaste away.
