Take Five

Science Books That Aren't Boring

Zero

October 13, 2005

By Charles Seife

Math, you say? You want me to read a book about numbers and algorithms and crap like that?! No, actually I want you to read about philosophy and invention, how nature inspired technology and about the history of nothing. That's right, nothing. It's a weird concept, that "zero"—even Seife admits, "Within zero there is the power to shatter the framework of logic."—but nothing (ha ha, get it?!) has had such a pivotal role in the history of mathematics and subsequently civilization as we know it.
