John Brown's Body

Saturday, 9:30 p.m. at Maui WaveRiders, Lahaina

October 20, 2005
[MUSIC] Back in 1995, when my friend said we were going to check out a reggae band called John Brown's Body, I didn't know what to expect. So I did some checking up on the name. John Brown was an American Abolitionist who played a major part in the history of slavery in the U.S. up until the Civil War. He made such an impact, there's a famous hymn written him. Anyway, this eight-piece ensemble from the East Coast is also about positive impact—on your funky groovin' reggae ass! They've got five albums under their belt, and their latest album, Pressure Points, has beats you can't help but get your sway on to, as well as jazzy ska tunes that'll breeze reggae right on into the future. My favorite song, "Make It Easy," is sure to be your new regg-anthem. Really, I could go on and on. And I highly recommend the show—they're so incredible live. If you don't go, well, it's your ass. Tickets: $15. [KIMBERLY L. WELCH]
