BIG-WAVE SURFERS SHOW A UNIQUE PASSION FOR MAUI'S ARTS COMMUNITY

It takes an extended family to create a theater community.EThere are those who participate once in a while and then there are people like Johnny and Alexis Ziegler, who donate their free time to keeping the arts alive.
"Theater is one of the last places left that bring people together," says Johnny. E
In these last four years they have participated in every production for Maui OnStage, as well as a variety of others. Alexis has even shared her great artistic talent painting some of the sets. E
The Zieglers have been living on Maui since 1989, when an airline refused to change their ticket on their way home to Seattle from a yearlong trip exploring Asia.ELoving the adrenaline of windsurfing and surfing big waves, they decided to stay.
You can hear the excitement in their voices when they talk of charging 20, 30 or even 40-foot waves. It's the same when they speak of the thrill and challenge of the stage. You could almost say that the Zieglers are fueled by the rush of the extreme wave of theater.
"It's amazing," says Johnny. "[It's like] magic that is woven together—the show is going up no matter what and everyone has to get their act together AND be good! This fun pressure is exciting."
You can see the Zieglers performing at the Masquerade Ball this Saturday, as well as MAPA's upcoming performance of Scrooge opening Nov. 25. MTW
