Issue 9.22: Cunning Lingle

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Nov. 17, 2005 message to 77 Hawai'i National Guard troops who just returned from Kuwait:

November 24, 2005
"We are glad that this first group will be reunited with their families, especially as we near the holidays. But we cannot forget those who are still serving overseas and the sacrifices they are making to defend freedom and democracy."

What she didn't say:

It's probably unfair to expect any elected official to offer anything other than bland, rosy platitudes when speaking of U.S. troops fighting a war, but her comments about "democracy"seem especially odd in a week that's seen allegations that our Iraqi allies have been torturing hundreds of prisoners, kinda like the old days under dictator Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi government has denied torturing anyone, and is now accusing the U.S. of lobbing white phosphorus artillery shells into civilian areas—a charge the Pentagon denies. Then again, no one ever said defending freedom and democracy was easy.
