Sunrise Cafe
Quiet surroundings, hearty sustenance

After a night spent downing Jager and tequila shots, I awoke the following afternoon in need of real, hearty sustenance. As usual, I grabbed my roommate—who played a big role in helping me down those Jager and tequila shots—and we headed to Lahaina's Sunrise Cafe in hopes of staging a recovery.
Not many people notice Sunrise Cafe, which is not much more than a small shack hidden off of Front Street. But those in the know—or anyone who just happens to stumble upon it—have the pleasure of entering a restaurant that's more than a cafe but not quite a diner.
Or maybe it's the other way around. In any case, if you're in a hurry, grab a scone, muffin or order a cup of joe for the road. But if you have a few minutes to relax, then sneak onto the back terrace and enjoy the partial view of the ocean.
Depending on your mood, Sunrise Cafe can satisfy your craving with breakfast food or their lunch/dinner selections. The menu is very diner-like, but with a personal, tropical accent. Sunrise Cafe offers morning entrees like French Toast, waffles and pancakes (with or without chocolate chips), and Lox Benedict ($5.95-$7.95) to satisfy your desire.
Since it was already mid-afternoon by the time my roommate and I arrived, we decided on two lunch items after a long deliberation. I ordered the Sante Fe Burrito—a flour tortilla stuffed with beans, chicken, a mix of cheeses and then topped with homemade tropical salsa and more melted cheese ($6.95). My roommate opted for the Chinese Chicken Salad, which consisted of chow mein noodles, papaya and pineapple served on a bed of greens ($7.95).
While our food was being prepared, we enjoyed our quiet surroundings and many glasses of water. Since we were the only people dining in the back, we had our choice of tables—should you have a similar seating situation, go with the one nestled in the corner on the far right. It's got the best view of the ocean and the furthest proximity from the street.
It wasn't long before two surprisingly elegant plates of food arrived. After taking a moment to admire the presentation, we got down to business. My hefty burrito came steaming hot and covered in melted cheese and salsa as promised. My first delicious bite was packed with a variety of Mexican and island flavors.
While I have no complaints about the quality or taste of the food, I was a little surprised to find rice and what I thought was tofu in my burrito instead of chicken. As for my roommate, she found her salad equally satisfying. The noodles and oriental dressing gave it a hearty taste while the fruit and greens offered a refreshing and cool flavor.
All in all, we were full, happy and not nearly as hung over as when we'd arrived. Our meal put us in the perfect mood to spend the rest of the day at the beach.
