Issue 9.26: Cunning Lingle
What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Dec. 10, 2005 Honolulu Advertiser story about her administration's new natural disaster preparedness package:
|
December 22, 2005 "Hawai'i has been very fortunate, unlike some of our sister states, but we are not immune. It's only a matter of time before we get hit again. Part of our success, a major part, is planning for that next occurrence."
What she didn't say:
Disaster preparation is an interesting thing—it's never controversial because it's supposedly above partisan politics, it's also something we never hear about until election time. In any case, the peril of Lingle's public warning of statewide vulnerability doesn't match her paltry appropriations wish: just $4 million to upgrade emergency shelters, instead of the $35 million the Advertiser says state Civil Defense officials actually want.
