"BEST OF THE BETA BAND"
From the chilly streets of Edinburgh, Scotland comes The Beta Band. In 1997, three friends came together to form the band—vocalist Stephen Mason, drummer Robin Jones and DJ/sampler John Maclean. Their songs usually start with simple, catchy campfire song arrangements and Mason's earnest Scottish-accented vocals. Soon layers of textures and electronic beats build and overlap with one another. The lyrics float in, out and around the songs, sounding like the mantras of a dyslexic Zen poet. England's (their "spiritual second home") rain-soaked, charcoal gray atmosphere also filters through their music. If you enjoy the psychedelic and whimsical songs of the Beatles and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, mixed with folk, funk and ambient sounds, pick this one up. —Astralwerks Records 2005
Andrew Shkolnik works at Request Records, 10 N. Market St., Wailuku, 244-9315, and is not really snobby but knows way more about music than is necessary. MTW
