The Maui County Board of Ethics ruling that there's no conflict in having a Maui Land & Pine lobbyist sit on the county's General Plan Committee, even though that committee may be making decisions on land MLP owns propels the publicly traded landowner back into the top slot. But it's a narrow victory, because Hawaiian Telcom's owner Carlyle Group just announced that it's shelling out $2.4 billion to buy Dunkin' Donuts, which it wants to expand so it can take on mighty Starbucks. And state officials's recent move to bring the hammer down on Aki Sinoto, Makena Resort's favorite archaeologist, has a lot do with the big land-owner's cellar showing. MTW
