If you've been paying attention, then you've certainly noticed the steady rise of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation up the power rankings. The reason is simple: they keep their mouths shut. For instance, two weeks ago the foundation cut a $10,000 check to the nonprofit Catholic Charities Hawaii so it can get small bilingual medical emergency cards to all non-English-speaking residents in the state. An undeniably good deed, it came on the heals of the Foundation's booting of a small family-owned thrift store that always paid its rent from one of its Oahu commercial properties for reasons that it declined to give to anyone, including the thrift store. In fact, the Honolulu Advertiser's Bob Krauss was so incensed by the foundation's action he wrote a scathing Nov. 23, 2005 column on it. MTW
