Issue 9.30: Cunning Lingle

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Jan. 6, 2006 press release about her releasing a $460,000 grant to the Hawai'i 3R's program:

January 19, 2006
"I am very proud to support this initiative that gets the community involved in a collaborative effort to repair and improve Hawai'i's public schools."

What she didn't say:

The state Department of Education needs nearly $500 million to fund and fix its 97 schools. That's tough, especially since it's far more important to get some tax cuts passed now, while we've still got an election year to worry about. But what if the administration just guilted taxpayers—who are already paying for the Department of Education—into doing the repair work themselves? That's easy! Cheap, too!
