Issue 9.31: Cunning Lingle

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Jan. 18, 2006 Maui News story on her releasing $710,000 to design a two-lane road connecting Upcountry and Kihei:

January 26, 2006
"This is a significant project that is sure to have a positive impact for the residents and visitors on Maui."

What she didn't say:

Can you tell there's an election coming up? Can you? All those years she spent on the Maui County Council and in the Mayor's office, to say nothing of three full years as Governor, and now is suddenly the right time to start spending money on a Kihei-Upcounty road? Ironically, this may backfire on her—build that road, and quaint little Upcountry won't be so quaint anymore, what with convoys of rentals choking Ulupalakua and Kula. Of course, the trade-off is that it would now be a breeze for locals to flood the Wailea resorts. Sounds like a beautiful situation to me.
