[PARADE/FESTIVAL] I've always thought of humpback whales as love-y creatures. They always look like they're smiling. They're always hanging out together in pods and jumping around. The big ones look out for the little ones and it's like one really big ohana. Apparently, the mother-calf relationship is a long-lasting one. And a humpback's heart weighs an average of a whopping 430 pounds! No wonder they seem so lovey. Well, it only seems appropriate that we celebrate a day in their honor when they grace us with their presence this time every year. For the parade, there's a $275 prize for best overall act/float. Other prizes for best musical presentation, funniest presentation, most creative individual or family, cutest keiki and best interpretation of theme. The parade ends at the park where you can find Raiatea Helm, Brother Noland, Dr. Nat & Rio Ritmo, Malino, Scott Huckabay, Gina Martinelli, GameKids, Halau Maui Nui o Kama with Kelii Taua and Kimokeo, also a keiki carnival, food booths, silent auction, displays and more. You know what a whale would say to that? Eeeeeeeeeee. Urrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Yeah, you heard me. Parade starts at 9 a.m. on South Kihei Road, from Kahele Street to Kalama Park. The festival is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kalama Park. [HEIDI KING]
