Maui Land & Pine rises a few notches this week because the Maui County Council finally approved its uber-luxurious Kapalua Mauka project. Was there ever any doubt? Well, yeah, there was actually. But the fact that it took this long shows even a well-heeled landowner like MLP can still be slowed by citizen outrage at the promotion of yet another big West Maui project that will tax that region's already-taxed sewage, water and road infrastructure. And A&B rises a couple rungs on news that semi-retired company man Mercer "Chubby" Vicens has all but anointed his longtime friend Gladys Baisa—recently retired from Maui Economic Opportunity—to the Maui County Council. She still has run first—hell, she hasn't even pulled papers yet—but she's pretty much a shoe-in. MTW
