'Aha Mele

Monday, 6 p.m. at Maui Myth & Magic Theater

March 02, 2006
[STAGE/MUSIC] I had never been to the 'Ulalena Theater before Monday night—when I decided to check 'Aha Mele. The theater alone was impressive, with a marble stage and the steep incline so there wasn't a bad seat in the house. Then out came the little fireball that would be our host, Kathy Collins. After the introductions, we were experiencing an ancient chant, accompanied by a dancer—the traditional Hawaiian greeting before "Howzit!" All night long there were amazing Hawaiian, Grammy-winning/nominated artists producing music and hula dancing that kept me in chicken skin the entire show. Add a good old story that Auntie guarantees is, "Hones'. Promise." And you've got yourself an authentic Hawaiian variety show. Where else would you get to see these talents on one stage together? Even the Mayor was there! Through April 24 (except Mar. 13). Tickets: $50, kama'aina $35, keiki $25. Call 661-9913 or 877-688-4800. [HEIDI KING]
