Issue 9.37: Cunning Lingle

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Feb. 28, 2006 press release announcing $3 million in new spending for state park improvements:

March 09, 2006
"These projects will increase safety for everyone who visits our beautiful state parks. Protecting the lives of residents and visitors is the most important and critical duty of our Administration."

What she didn't say:

Of the $3 million, just $500,000 goes to "safety" work, and half of that will go towards "rockfall mitigation assessment" at Diamond Head State Park (the rest of the safety money goes toward "warning signs"). As for the other $2.5 million in this appropriation, that will go to something far more important than even public safety—something so important it's strange Lingle didn't see the need to comment on it: "large capacity cesspool replacement/closure projects." Hey, large capacity cesspools aren't cheap, people. And as anyone who's driven a great distance to get to a state park, big cesspools are absolutely mandatory.
