Ocean Noise

Thursday, 6-7 p.m. at Ocean Science Discovery Center

March 23, 2006
[LECTURE] No, they're not blasting Skynyrd under there—at least, as far as we know—but with all the noise from commercial air guns used for oil and gas exploration, seismic surveys, underwater explosives, shipping traffic and low frequency active sonar (LFAS), our humpback whales and other marine life are getting quite a gill-full. Marine mammals are especially dependent on sound for communication and feeding, so it only stands to reason that increased noise underwater could be detrimental to their survival. And so Pacific Whale Foundation is hosting this free talk and slideshow by Marsha L. Green, Ph.D. called, "Effects of underwater noise on marine mammals and fish: research, conservation and politics"—which is maybe not such a catchy title, but this is serious business here, people. No time for witticisms! We'll leave that to the journalistic hacks like, uh… ME! Yeah… 'cept I'm having a whale of a time coming up with anything so… The OSDC is located at the Harbor Shops at Ma'alaea, next to Maui Ocean Center. For more info, call 249-8811.
