Picks of the Week

This Week in Imported Reggae Bands

Sunday, 5:30 p.m., VFW's in Kihei; Tuesday, 10 p.m. at Casanova in Makawao

May 04, 2006
[REGGAE] Soldiers of Jah Army (SOJA) is a socially conscious reggae-based band from Washington, D.C. And the critics love them, throwing terms out like "flawless," "fiery," and "mesmerizing," as well as the requisite hemp jokes and references to white boys with dreads. Word is, if you're a fan of Groundation—and I know there are tons of you out there—you might wanna check these guys out, too. VFW's (Veterans of Foreign Wars Bldg) is located at 2502 Uluniu Rd. behind Azeka Plaza parking lot, Oceanside. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Sunday's show is all ages. Tuesday's show is 21 and over. Doors open one hour before showtime. Get your tickets online at www.inticketing.com or call 866-55-TICKETS; also available at Beach Road Records, Bahama Mama, Requests, Paradise Audio and Maui Sea Skins.
