[CULTURAL] Maui's signature cultural heritage event returns to Lahaina at Kamehameha Iki Beach Park and Banyan Tree Park. For the 9th year, the International Festival of Canoes honors Hawai'i's heritage with Polynesia as well as providing a link to indigenous peoples all across the Pacific. Featuring an annual line-up of master carvers and artisans from Tonga, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, New Zealand and Hawaiian Islands, this event gathers together and honors those inidigenous cultures who share a symbiotic relationship to the Pacific Ocean. Unless otherwise noted, events take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This week's line-up…
Thu-Fri: Rough carving to shape logs into canoe hulls, Polynesian arts and crafts displays at 525 Front Street.
Fri-Sat: Canoes are moved to Banyan Tree Park, day and night
Sat-Wed: Cultural Arts & Crafts Festival, as well as canoe carving, stone and tiki carving, pahu drum making and surfboard shaping at Banyan Tree Park at Banyan Tree Park.
Sat: "Native Plants & Their Uses" workshop at The Wharf Cinema Center Conf. Room, 10 a.m.; 'Ukulele Boys performance, 4 to 5 p.m.; Te Wananga Maori dancers and singers performance, 1:45 and 5:15 p.m.
Mon: "Ancient Hawaiian Weaponry" workshop at Pioneer Inn Courtyard, 10 a.m.
Tue: "Feather Lei Making" workshop at The Wharf Cinema Center Conf. Room, 9 a.m.
Wed: "Wood Block Carving & Printing on Pareo" workshop at Banyan Tree Park, 10 a.m.
