Issue 9.48: Cunning Lingle
What Governor Linda Lingle said in a May 12, 2006 press release on her signing HB 2175 supporting "market-based" sustainable energy development:

"Through this new law we are reaffirming the state's responsibility to Lead by Example to establish a secure energy and economic future for the people of Hawai'i. This new law, which was passed with bipartisan support by the Legislature, will help state agencies increase energy efficiency and will set an example for residents and businesses to embrace energy conservation and support energy alternatives."
What she didn't say:
There are lots of other ways Lingle could "Lead by Example" in the struggle to bring cleaner, sustainable and efficient energy to the islands. For instance, she could stop accepting campaign contributions from Big Oil, which is not clean, sustainable or efficient. On Dec. 27, 2005, Lingle accepted $1,000 from the refiner Tesoro Hawai'i's political action committee. That brought Tesoro's total contributions to her so far to $3,200, according to the governor's most recent campaign filing. Like all the Big Oil companies benefiting from a volatile market and Persian Gulf region, Tesoro's profits were way, way up in the first quarter of 2006: 54 percent higher, in fact. I can think of no better way to stand for sustainable energy than by publicly denouncing that kind of profiteering.
