May 25, 2006 [POETRY SLAM] Maui Booksellers' spoken word "poetry slam" is back! After outgrowing its original home in the cozy Wailuku bookstore, the competition moves to the historic Iao Theater for the first time. That's right, folks—competition! Randy Mills, who won the last poetry slam in April, says that while it's less personal than 8 Mile-style rap battles, the competitions can be intense (perhaps due to the $100 cash prize). Admission is $10 (only $7 in advance or $5 with student/seniors I.D.), which is slightly more than a ticket to Tom Cruise's latest clunker, only I guarantee this will be much more thought provoking and inspiring. And I imagine you'll have a far better chance of not being distracted by high-schoolers' cell phone conversations. Come watch Mills attempt to defend his title against Maui's best spoken-wordsmiths, or come early and sign up (7 p.m.) to perform yourself. Either way, make it a point to show up and observe some true artistic expression. For more info, call Maui Booksellers at 244-9091. [COREY "THE INTERN" NIELSEN]
