This week marks the first appearance of Tesoro Hawai'i in the Maui 10, and, frankly, it's about time. After all, it's the largest oil refiner in the state, with 32 gas stations—four of which are on Maui. But we're starting it out in the five spot for a couple reasons. The company is very powerful: the Honolulu Advertiser recently reported that Tesoro wouldn't be meeting the state's ethanol blend standards—a company spokesman said there were "manufacturing complications"—and state officials replied that not meeting the standards was fine by them. But at the same time, the company can be stymied by things like oil spills—like the one Tesoro caused last weekend off Barbers Point, which dumped about 2,000 gallons of precious, precious light crude into the briney deep.
