Father's Day
Sunday, June 18

June 15, 2006 [HOLIDAY] I cannot mention Father's Day without acknowledging my own father. Though not responsible for bringing me into this world (he adopted me when I was seven), he is perhaps the person most responsible for any success I've had in it. Not all the lessons he attempted to teach me stuck—just ask my wife—but those that did made me a better man. Without his advice to always respect and honor women—a lesson I took to heart—I wouldn't have an amazing wife to tolerate the piles of debris he told me never to let accumulate around the house (still working on that one). I know firsthand that not all dads inspire the same reverence as mine. (Notice that I'm not exactly singing the praises of my biological father). But Father's Day is for the celebration of the very best dads; those who provide, advise, coach and push us. The dads who see themselves in us, and teach us that we can achieve far more than we believe. Because, like it or not, there's a little bit of our fathers in every one of us. So today, treat dad to brunch, take him golfing, or call him on the phone. And if you still live at home and really want to make him happy, pick up the debris you've left around the house. Your future wife will thank you for it. [COREY NIELSEN]
