June 15, 2006 [HAWAIIAN/REGGAE] Paula Fuga was the belle of the ball at this year's Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. No, she wasn't nominated for anything—that's no matter. It's just that everyone recognizes a star when they see—or hear—one. Just two years after she auditioned for American Idol, Fuga was selected by Jack Johnson to join him in this year's popular Kokua Festival. Now the Hawaiian girl from Waimanalo is being touted as the silk-voiced young queen of the next wave of contemporary Hawaiian music that innovatively integrates R&B and reggae with traditional elements, like 'olelo Hawai'i and 'ukulele, to produce what is called "maoli music." Fuga will be playing this weekend's shows with the One Love 'Ohana Band, and with special guest Innavision at Hapa's. $12 at Hapa's; $10 at Casanova. Her acoustic performance at Borders Books in Kahului is free. For more info, visit paulafugamusic.com.
