What Governor Linda Lingle said in her May 23, 2006 Weekly Radio Address on her 15-20 percent state tax credit for the film industry that goes into effect July 1:

"Hawai'i has long been a favorite location for film and television. From South Pacific and Jurassic Park to Hawaii 5-0, Magnum P.I. and Lost, our islands have captivated audiences for decades… Last year film projects spent $100 million in the state, creating hundreds of jobs and generating $160 million in secondary spending and invaluable exposure."
What she didn't say:
Of those movies and TV programs cited above, three—South Pacific, Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum—all had to be filmed in Hawai'i because they were about Hawai'i. And that's because mainland people—and people around the world, I suppose—want to see stuff on Hawai'i. Tax credits or no—all three of those shows pre-dated any corporate welfare from Honolulu to the film industry—those shows were coming here, as will future shows like North Shore (whoops, that was cancelled) and Baywatch Hawaii (ditto, though in that case cancellation was a tragedy).
