[FILM] In 1998, an Aborigine named Bunny Lawrie invited indigenous leaders from around the globe to the southern coast of Australia for a traditional "whale dreaming" ceremony. The subsequent gathering was attended by Hawaiian, Maori, Sioux, Columbian and Congo elders, as well as British filmmaker Kim Kindersley and Julian Lennon, who co-produced and contributed the theme song for the resulting documentary. The Gathering: Return of the Whale Dreamers, which won the best film award at the Byron Bay (Australia) Film Festival, is back on Maui in response to popular demand. It tells a story of displaced people joining together to honor their ancient land, culture and history in a world where such traditions are becoming increasingly forgotten. (Hmm... remind anyone else of Hawai'i?) This event will commence with music, drumming and a chant, and any donations will be channeled into various organizations supporting indigenous people, the environment and social justice, as well as women's, children's and animal charities. The film's message is simple and clear: Respect the wisdom of native cultures and take action towards the preservation and honor of that wisdom, before it's too late.
