Damon Wayans

Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC

July 20, 2006
[COMEDY] In nine months I will attempt to interview the Dalai Lama, who many consider the spiritual leader of the world. Taking nothing away from his Holiness, I have to wonder if his devotees have ever beheld the divinity of one Damon Wayans. When I heard that Wayans would be appearing on Maui for a night of stand-up comedy I shuddered, mistaking him for one of the Wayans responsible for the atrocious White Chicks and equally atrocious looking Little Guy. But enlightenment hit me like a coin-filled sock when I realized that it was not Shawn or Marlon, but DAMON-FREAKING-WAYANS who would be preaching the gospel of humor at the MACC. That's the Damon Wayans, who on the strength of his "Homie the Clown" In Living Color character alone is a comedy god (a "Homie" movie is due in 2007). Still not a believer? Damon is the divine creator of perhaps the most heavenly character ever committed to celluloid, Major Payne, orator of the immortal line, "Maybe what he need is for you to pop your titty out his mouth and let the boy grow up." I can only pray that my attempt to meet with the Dalai Lama works out better than my efforts to nail down Wayans for a pre-show interview. But I know I can't be too disappointed. For as the Dalai Lama might say, it is desire that causes suffering. Or in the words of Major Payne, "You want sympathy? Look in the dictionary between spit and syphilis." [CN]
