Small Island, Big Problems

Monday-Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Castle Theater

July 27, 2006
[CONFERENCE] For such a small island, Maui sure has big problems. Native Hawaiians, who used to be, well, in charge, now make up a disproportionate percentage of the state's prison population; massive hotel and timeshare construction is far out-stripping infrastructure development; and just about everywhere, that wish used to be called "sacred" is increasingly surrounded or covered over by something we now call "golf." Of course, Maui is hardly alone in having to deal with these conflicts. This week, the International Small Islands Studies Association will hold its 2006 conference. Titled "Sustainable Islands," organizers will discuss how to mix ecology, economy, social equity and heritage in such a way that people actually get along. How novel. The event is free. The Castle Theater is located at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, One Cameron Way, Kahului, 242-2787, www.mauiarts.org. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
