Inspired Art

Now through Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Schaefer Int'l Gallery, MACC

July 27, 2006
[ART] The following poem was inspired solely by Maui artist Tom Sewell's "Enigma of the Mill" multimedia exhibit. Well, that and a drawing made by my 6-year-old cousin. But not at all by The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Or my friend Vince's hydroponic chronic.

Picture yourself in a seat in a theater / With hardwood floors and climate control / Somebody warns you to turn off your cell phone / An usher with kaleidoscope eyes / Large yellow trucks brimming with cane / Projected 100 feet tall / Cane field workers with dust in their eyes / And you're gone. / Tropical Hawaiian cane! / Focus your ears on the hypnotic soundtrack / Mill machinery rhythmically hums / The workers are careful to avoid molten sparks / They spurt so incredibly high! / Transport drivers talk story by the gate / Waiting to take the sugar away / Step away from the movie and towards the exhibits / And you're off / Tropical Hawaiian cane! / Picture yourself viewing sculpture installations / Or smelling the actual sugar boil / Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile / The usher with kaleidoscope eyes / Tropical Hawaiian cane!
