July 27, 2006 [FILM] According to the good folks at Maui Film Festival, Akeelah & The Bee is "Oprah Winfrey's favorite film of the year to date." And you know Ms. O has impeccable taste. Not surprisingly, the film is an inspirational drama. But it's also starring Academy Award winners Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne—bonus!—alongside newcomer Keke Palmer. The story is about a young girl from South Los Angeles tries to make it to the National Spelling Bee. Ah, good ole spelling bees. You know, I was a spelling bee champion back in the day. And look where it got me! Okay, maybe don't—just go see the movie. Rated PG; 110 min. For more info: 572-3456 or www.mauifilmfestival.com Tickets: $10 single, $8 w/MFF passport.
