Save the Cinema!

Wednesday, 5 & 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater

August 03, 2006
[FILM] While reading last week's Maui Time Weekly, I came across a disturbing piece of information. No, it wasn't Brad from Sales' "Staff Box" answer (for once). What I'm referring to is the small ad in the bottom right corner of page 21, the one that reads, "Going…Going…Gone?" It was for the Maui Film Festival's weekly "Candlelight Cinema" at the MACC's Castle Theater, and when I saw it I almost choked. No more "Candlelight Cinema?" WTF? Well, it seems that attendance has been less than overwhelming lately. For them to continue to be able to run the always fascinating, independent films it's known for, people are going to have to start showing some interest. Well, people, guess what? Here's your chance. Right now. This week. On Wednesday, Mongolian Ping Pong will be the featured film, and it looks really interesting. Directed by 28-year-old Ning Hao, it tells the tale of Bilike, a nine year-old country boy who finds a ping-pong ball and can't imagine what it is. His curiosity is the impetus for a quest that leads him to his elders, some wise Lamas, and into the city to find the origin of his discovery. All along the way the scenery explodes off the screen, thanks to the keen eye of Hao. Whether or not your eyes behold this beautiful feature is up to you. As the apocalyptic ad said, "Its fate is in your hands." The Castle Theater is located at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, One Cameron Way, Kahului. For more info, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com.
